Almost all the writers I know who did hire a PR person said it wasn't worth the money, did not move sales at all, and everything PR person did they could have done themselves. That, of course, excludes the mega best sellers who have PR people already IN publishing houses who are dedicated to just that one author full time The rest of us...not so much benefit to hiring outside PR people for 10K, as far as I've heard. The robot I would hire would be free, naturally. :)
I have a book, published under another name, that isn't moving. I like to write. I like the research. But I don't like marketing.
I agree that it is so hard to put yourself out there to pitch or sell books.
